Review Motherboards Unboxed Asus ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming, Prime Z390-A

Croatian media outlets PC Expert share unboxing videos of a pair of Asus Z390 motherboards that will come on its YouTube channel today. The ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming and Prime Z390-A are only two of the 19 Z390-based models that Taiwan motherboard makers are preparing to launch soon.

ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming

As symbolized by "I" in its name, ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming is a mini-ITX Format motherboard and only confirms one of the Asus Z390 motherboards' portfolio so far. This little monster has undergone a total change and does not look like its predecessor Z370. Asus has replaced the silver heat sink with slim and black variants. This motherboard is now equipped with a rear panel cover and a pre-installed I / O shield.

The ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming displays what appears to be a 10-phase power delivery subsystem. Given the reduced dimensions, the motherboard is only equipped with two DDR4 memory slots. However, the memory footprint between the processor and memory slot is also shorter, which in turn gives the ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming an edge in memory performance beyond standard ATX offerings. For storage, Asus complements the motherboard with four SATA III ports oriented vertically and two M.2 slots, one on the front of the motherboard with a heat sink and one hidden on the back of the motherboard. There is only one PCIe 3.0 x16 expansion slot for one graphics card; therefore, the owner must make it counted.

The ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming's I / O Area is home to two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port and one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port. There is one USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 2.0 header present on the motherboard too. The remaining ports consist of DisplayPort out, HDMI port, LAN port, five S / PDIF audio and optical jacks out. As expected, the ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming comes with an onboard module to provide Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth v4.2 connectivity.

The Prime Z390-A retains a black-and-white theme with a touch of silver accents that characterize the first series of this brand motherboard. However, the heat sink has been redesigned in the Z390 iteration. Although the motherboard has a rear panel cover, it does not have a pre-mounted I / O shield present on more expensive models.

From what we can know from YouTube videos, Prime Z390-A has an eight-phase power delivery subsystem. This motherboard can accommodate up to four DDR4 memory modules. It also provides six SATA III ports and two M.2 ports for storage. One M.2 slot has its own heat sink, while the other sits naked under the processor socket. The total number of expansion slots is up to three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots.

The different port circuits behind the I / O of the Prime Z370-A motherboard include the old-school PS / 2 port, two USB 2.0 ports, three USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-Port C, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, DisplayPort output, HDMI port, LAN port, five audio jacks, and S / PDIF optical exit. As for the front panel USB connectors, the motherboard has two USB 3.1 headers (Gen 1 and Gen 2) and three USB 2.0 headers.
