EVGA Forgoes DVD Driver: It's All About USB Flash Drive

Such driver disks have become a part of PC enthusiast life as far as I can remember. Before Windows included drivers, they all came from the media that came with the motherboard. I first remembered it on the floppy then after the optical media took over, moved to the CD. As the number of drivers and software included increases both in quantity and size, the capacity of CDs and transferred board partners moves to DVDs that offer more capacity and faster read speeds. For example, the board driver disk of the Z370-based board weighs at 6.57GB on disk, far exceeding the capacity of CD (~ 700MB) and single-sided DVD (4.7 GB).
For that, yesterday on Twitter, Director of Global Product Management EVGA, Jacob Freeman announced that in the future, the EVGA motherboard will not come with a driver disk, but USB Flash which contains all the necessary drivers and software. These include H370-based boards now and others are moving forward. Instead of the usual DVD we see, EVGA will include a small 8GB USB flash drive with EVGA logo printed on it. Although this is not the first (Asus high-end board in the past including one), it is of course acceptable, if only for quick installation of USB versus CD / DVD installation. These drives can also be rewritten so they can be used for other purposes as well.
Overall, it's good to see EVGA embracing what we feel is modern, and faster, medium to basic drivers and software installations, and hope other board partners follow. I was wondering a bit about the cost, but even if it adds $ 1 more, it's worth it (for me). No more whistles from optical drives to install drivers with H370 motherboards and EVGA motherboards in the future. It's about time!
Editor's Note: EVGA has confirmed the drive is USB 2.0 based and costs about twenty times more than is required by optical disk. Fortunately, EVGA says that significant cost increases will not trickle down to consumers, which we all value.
