How to Install TWRP Recovery & Root w / Magisk with Fastboot! [General way]

In this Android Root 101 tutorial, we will learn how to install your Android TWRP recovery & root using Fastboot. This tutorial is a "universal method," which means you'll be able to use any Android device except the following:f

Most Android devices use fastboot to install the TWRP recovery so if you do not have Samsung, you should be good to go.

This tutorial assumes that you have ACCEPTED BOOTLOADER, if you have not unlocked your bootloader, please follow How To Unlock Bootloader on Android to unlock your bootloader then return to this tutorial. But follow Step 1 to see if there is a TWRP recovery for your Android first so you do not have to unlock the bootloader if you do not have TWRP recovery for your Android.

Step 1. Before starting this tutorial, you must first figure out if your Android has an official TWRP recovery.

First, find the right model of your Android in Settings-> About Mobile or Settings-> Software Information.

Goto TWRP.me then search your Android model.

If you do not see your Android device at TWRP.me, you are no less lucky. You can try Googling for an unofficial TWRP version. Remember, not all phones have the official TWRP version so if you do not see them, try Googling around for TWRP recovery of your device.

There are two different basic methods to flash TWRP.

The first only flash the TWRP image file and if you only see the file that ends with ".img", that means you only need to flash the TWRP recovery image file to the recovery partition. Download the latest TWRP image file. We will call this "type 1" for the benefit of this tutorial.

The second type most on newer Android devices like Pixel 2 or OnePlus 6, you'll find TWRP image file (file ending with .img) and zip file installed TWRP (file ending in zip). If you see this second type for your Android, download the TWRP image and the zip file of the installer. We will call this "type 2" for the benefit of this tutorial.

Step 2. Next we will turn off Android device and manually boot your android into fastboot mode.

[Universal Method] For most devices, you can boot into fastboot mode by simply holding the Volume Down and Power buttons for about 3-5 seconds.

For HTC devices, you can also use the Volume Down and Power buttons together. Now, for HTC make sure your phone says "Download Mode". If not, use the Volume buttons to find "Boot to Download" and press the Power button to go into Download mode, which is the correct fastboot mode for the HTC device. (HTC fastboot mode NOT for fastboot)

For OnePlus devices like OnePlus 6, you simply hold the Volume Up and Power buttons together.

Step 3. You'll also need to download fastboot.zip, Magical tools, Windows ADB Drivers, and No Verity Opt Encrypt Zip. Unzip the fastboot.zip into a folder called "fastboot" in your Downloads directory. If you have followed our bootloader unlock guide, you do not need to reinstall Windows ADB drivers but if you have not already, install Windows ADB drivers. No driver is required for Mac or Linux.

For Windows, you can verify you have the correct driver installed by going to Device Manager. You should see "ADB Android interface" or something similar. If you have not seen it yet, try removing and plugging back your USB port and try another USB port if it does not work.

Copy the TWRP image you downloaded in Step 1 to the fastboot folder.

Step 4. Next, we will flash TWRP recovery using fastboot. There are two methods that depend on the type of TWRP that you need to install (refer back to Step 1 for your type).

First open the command prompt by typing "cmd" in the search bar for Windows. For Mac or Linux, open the terminal (if you do not know the way, please Google).

For TWRP's "1" recovery type, type follow to flash TWRP recovery into recovery partition.

For Windows:

cd Downloads

cd fastboot

fastboot flash recovery PutImageFileNameHere.img

For Mac:

cd Downloads

cd fastboot

chmod 755

./fastboot-mac flash recovery PutImageFileNameHere.img

For Linux:

cd Downloads

cd fastboot

chmod 755

sudo ./fastboot-linux flash recovery PutImageFileNameHere.img

REMEMBER to replace "PutImageFileNameHere.img" with your TWRP image file name.

For “type 2” devices, use the Install menu and install your TWRP Installer zip file.

After flashing, reboot into TWRP recovery and if booting back to TWRP, you have a permanent TWRP recovery installed on your "type 2" device.

Step 5. Now, if you boot into TWRP but see the "Unmodified System Partition" warning message as below, you need to delete the data and decrypt your phone unless you see another option for entering a passcode (like a non-working OnePlus device). t need to be decrypted). If you do not see the warning message below, skip to Step 7.

Select "Continue Reading". If you unlock your device, you may have deleted the data. If you have not deleted the data after unlocking the bootloader or booting your phone and logging in, delete the data now and reboot into TWRP recovery 

Step 7. At this point, if you want to install custom ROM

Copy all Magical root files and No Verity Opt Encrypt ZIP files

If your device is encrypted, install the No Verify Opt Encrypt zip file here, otherwise skip to the next step.

When finished install reboot TWRP reboot using the Reboot Menu from the home screen. Upon reboot, your phone should no longer display a warning message and immediately enter the TWRP home menu. If so, congratulations, you've successfully disabled encryption on your Android.

Step 8. For most Android devices, you can simply install TWRP recovery, then simply install Magisk ZIP file to get full root.

Tap on “Install’.

You can also open up any root app such as the free Titanium Backup app on the Play Store and you should see “Superuser Request” window pop-up.  If  you see that, congratulations!  You have successfully rooted your Android and also installed TWRP recovery permanently.
